It's not what we teach, it's how we teach.

Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies.

Student writingRecognized by Hennepin County as a Gold Level Winner for our Wellness Plan promoting a healthy school environment, Odyssey educates the whole child. We teach in a small class-sized environment, which focuses on creating healthy bodies and healthy minds. We foster healthy eating habits, and offer students gym three times each week. Healthy minds are nurtured in multi-age classrooms, allowing students the opportunity to learn from one another. In this way, peer learning and mentoring evolves naturally. Multi-age classrooms encourage parents, students and teachers to build relationships for two consecutive years.

Odyssey C.A.R.E.S.

Our teachers are trained in Responsive Classroom, a social curriculum which helps build our school into a learning community where both social and academic goals are obtained. Under the Responsive Classroom Model, the CARES philosophy character development program is key to our success. CARES stands for Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self-Control. Throughout the year, all Odyssey students are recognized for at least one of these characteristics; have their photo taken for a spotlight appearance on our CARES Showcase Bulletin Board, and are recognized during classroom celebrations, or an all-school assembly, as the school calendar accommodates.

Community & World Citizens

Odyssey believes that learning happens best when children are active participants. Involvement in maintaining a healthy, sustainable school, taking expeditions into the world, whether to an Environmental Learning Center or participating in service-learning, assists in shaping our students into responsible, engaged citizens. Our students know what the world has to offer, and what they have to offer the world. Each student will leave our school ready to use their unique gifts and skills to contribute to their community in a positive way.

Where Everyone Really Does Know Your Name

Student coloringOdyssey maintains the feeling of family by maintaining small class sizes. This is paramount to who we are. In addition, we celebrate the foundations of family every Friday morning, when we meet in our Family Groups. These groups are comprised of students from each grade level, K-8, whom remain together all year. Here, we conduct our morning meeting, and proceed with an activity, typically partnered-up, continuing the mentoring relationship between elementary and middle school students. Activities may include sharing a story or playing a board game. Project nights and family events are held each trimester to keep students and parents involved.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you’ll land among the stars.

Odyssey Academy believes that:

Girl
  • Children, by nature, are learners and are capable of high achievement
  • Families are the first and primary educators for their children
  • Children need a safe learning environment, accepting of their individuality and diversity, learning styles and abilities
  • Learning occurs best when positive, long-lasting relationships exist between families, educators, and communities
  • Children become involved citizens and contribute to the community when they experience supportive environments and caring relationships with others
